Living a Paleo lifestyle isn't just about changing your diet; it's about reshaping your entire living environment to be more in harmony with nature. Here's how you can take actionable steps towards creating an eco-friendly home that aligns with Paleo principles, including practical advice to make your living space a calm, relaxing area of sustainability and wellness.

  1. Bring Nature Indoors

  • Adopt houseplants: Start with easy-to-care-for plants like snake plants or pothos, which purify the air and add life to your space.

  • Choose natural materials: Swap out synthetic fabrics for natural alternatives like wool, cotton, or bamboo in rugs, curtains, and linens.

  • Incorporate wooden elements: Add wooden, simple, functional furniture or decorative pieces to your living space to foster a connection with nature, which might improve the room's energy and atmosphere, and maintain a connection with nature. Even better if the furniture is made locally.

2. Declutter the Paleo way

  • Assess your items aka Marie Condo style: Hold each item and ask if it serves a purpose or brings you joy. If not, it’s time to part ways.

  • Organize thoughtfully: Use baskets or boxes made from natural materials to organize what’s left, keeping your space clean and energy flowing.

  • Declutter digitally: Extend decluttering to digital devices for a more peaceful mind, removing distractions and reducing overwhelm.

3. DIY Natural Cleaners

  • All-purpose cleaner: Combine 1 part water, 1 part vinegar, and lemon peel or your favorite essential oils for a fresh scent. You can even add some baking soda for tough stains. Use this for most of your home surfaces.

  • Baking soda scrub: For tougher grime, use baking soda with a few drops of essential oil. It works wonders in the bathroom and kitchen.

  • Window cleaner: Mix equal parts water and vinegar with a teaspoon of lemon juice for streak-free windows.

  • Furniture polish: Create a natural polish with olive oil and lemon juice to keep wood furniture shining and healthy. Alternatively you can also use beeswax polish.

4. Sustainable Kitchen Practices: Eat and Live Green

  • Composting: Start a compost bin for your organic waste. It's simpler than you think and reduces your household waste significantly. Just keep a small container on your kitchen bench for organic waste, and empty it out into your green compost bin, community garden compost, or your home compost whenever it’s full.

  • Buy in bulk: Invest in reusable produce bags and containers to buy bulk items. It helps  reduce packaging waste and often saves money too.

  • Eco-friendly utensils: Switch to cooking utensils made from sustainable materials, such as bamboo or recycled metals.

  • Non-toxic cookware: Toxins primarily get into our food when cooking through heat, oil, acidity and abrasion. For example, a broken or scratched nonstick frying pan can release over 2 million nanoparticles of PFAs. Crazy and scary! Switch to non-harmful cookware like cast iron pans to protect your health and wellbeing.

  • Mindful and safe water use: Install an aerator on your kitchen tap to reduce water flow, conserving water while washing dishes or food. Also filter your water to lower your intake of harmful contaminants.

5. Energy Efficiency: Simple Adjustments

  • Lighting: Replace old bulbs with LED ones for immediate energy savings.

  • Leaks: Fix any dripping taps and make sure your windows and doors are well-sealed to conserve energy.

  • Smart thermostats: Install a smart thermostat to better control heating and cooling, optimizing energy use based on your actual needs.

  • Insulate your home: Check for drafts around windows and doors, and add proper insulation to maintain your home's temperature efficiently.

6. Community and Connection: Have Fun

  • Recipe swap: Host a Paleo potluck or a DIY cleaner-making session with friends. It's a great way to share ideas, deepen friendships, and build a community.

  • Local markets: Visit your local farmers' market and if you feel inclined, share your discoveries with neighbors or on social media, encouraging others to support local, sustainable food sources as well.

  • Local workshops: Attend or organize workshops focusing on sustainable and healthy living to learn and connect with like-minded individuals.

  • Eco-friendly product swaps: Host swap events with friends or community members to exchange rarely used items, reducing waste and promoting sustainability.

7. Bedroom: Your Sleep Sanctuary

  • Natural bedding: Switch to bedding made from organic, natural fibers that are breathable and free from harmful chemicals, such as linen, bamboo, or organic cotton. These materials promote better airflow and help regulate your body temperature for a more comfortable rest.

  • Non-toxic mattress: Invest in a mattress that's free from off-gassing chemicals and synthetic materials. Look for certifications such as GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) or Greenguard to ensure your mattress supports both your health and environmental sustainability.

  • Tidy up: Embrace a minimalist approach to your bedroom decor. A clutter-free space not only reduces stress but also minimizes dust and allergens.

  • Soothing Lighting: Replace harsh, artificial lights with warmer, dimmable options. Salt lamps or candles can add a calming, natural glow to your evening routine and prepare your body for a restful night's sleep.

  • Calming colors: Paint your bedroom walls with low-VOC paint in calming colors that promote relaxation and tranquility, enhancing the room’s overall ambiance for better rest.

  • Use essential oils: Incorporate a diffuser with calming essential oils like lavender or chamomile in your bedroom to help you calm down at the end of the day and fall asleep easier.

8. Making It Stick: Commit to One Change at a Time

  • Set Monthly Goals: Focus on integrating one new eco-friendly habit each month, whether it's reducing plastic use, starting a herb garden, or making your own cleaning products.

  • Reflect: At the end of each month, reflect on the changes you’ve made. What impact have they had on your life? Use the insights you gain to guide your next steps.

Embracing a Paleo-inspired, eco-friendly lifestyle at home can take a while, and that’s okay. Every small change you make has a ripple effect, which improves your wellbeing and also contributes to a healthier planet (which in turn has a positive effect on your mental health and how you feel about yourself). ;)

I’d love to hear about the steps you’ve taken in your own home to make it more of a safe, peaceful, healthy space. What worked? What didn’t? And why? Hearing about your experiences is so valuable for myself and others who are on a similar path.
